Knowing that many companies will sell you a product that is not healthy, more and more people started asking the same questions.
What is inside the product?
And the same question is being asked for toothpaste.
What is inside toothpaste?
And the answer to this issue is very different. Some toothpaste brands care more about health and less about money. But mainly all of them are ignoring health concerns and are more focused on making money. And it is not their guilt for that. Many people don’t care about their health, so why would a company that needs to make money care?
What ingredients are in toothpaste?
All kinds of toothpaste, conventional and natural have some flavoring. Mint is the most popular flavor. But from where is extracted is the big question. Flavors are mostly created in labs by mixing chemicals. Lab-made flavors are the worst possible flavor you could use in your mouthwash. I can only suggest you to use toothpaste that uses essential oils for flavor.
These toothpaste ingredients keep the toothpaste in a stable form. Well, I m not sure if this is needed or if there is some other way to keep toothpaste in solid form. But xanthan gums, carrageenans, and sodium carboxymethylcellulose. All these ingredients are not natural and are additives. First two are even linked to cancer.
Humectant Toothpaste Ingredients
Also not needed for teeth health. These ingredients are used to keep toothpaste in liquid form. So you can already notice absurdity in this whole business. First, you need ingredients to keep toothpaste from becoming too hard, and then you need ingredients in toothpaste to keep it liquid. The main problem these companies have been keeping the toothpaste in a usable form. But who says we need to use toothpaste in a tube. They can easily change packaging and solve this issues without ignoring our health. Most popular humectant components are glycerol, sorbitol and propylene glycol. They are not natural.
Yes, they use detergents inside toothpaste. Most vicious detergent is sodium lauryl sulfate. Linked to various health issues. That why we have more and more kinds of toothpaste without this ingredient. Less usable is sodium N-lauroyl sarcosinate. If you have a good toothbrush, you don’t need so much foam in your mouth. The foam helps fight the plaque. But if you care about your health you most probably don’t have a plaque on your teeth and will never have it. The reason for this is food you eat. If you eat healthy food, you will not have a plaque problem.
The cheapest way of keeping your toothpaste from bacterial grow is using preservatives. All you need to do is include one of the preservatives: formaldehyde, dechlorinated phenols, benzoates, and Alcohols.
Abrasives are used to clean your teeth. Again, if you have a healthy diet, you don’t need to use toothpaste with strong abrasives. The reason for this is that abrasives are actually hurting your enamel and teeth. If you brush too strong and too often with too abrasive toothpaste, you can hurt your teeth. Mos popular abrasives are zirconium silicate, sodium metaphosphate, calcium pyrophosphate, silica, dicalcium phosphate or calcium carbonate.
All conventional kind of toothpaste has this ingredient. But also some natural toothpaste brands have fluoride on their toothpaste ingredient list. There is an agenda against fluoride, and many companies are now making toothpaste without fluoride. Just because people are getting educated, and they started to care about their health. You can read about fluoride in our article about fluoride in toothpaste. Most harmful ingredients in toothpaste are fluoride and SLS.
If you care about your health and have a healthy lifestyle, then you don’t have teeth problems. You can simply use a good toothbrush and use pure water to clean your teeth. If you notice that you need some more cleaning, then you can use coconut oil mixed with soda bicarbonate. Before mixing soda bicarbonate with coconut oil you can dissolve soda bicarbonate in water, so soda bicarbonate is not too abrasive to your teeth.
